Identified Man

Tree David Meyer - Oberlauchringen is mentioned 76 times between 1660 and 1706. His designation in the Stühlingen family tree is 'M1'.

David (Meyer) of Oberlauchringen was the first Jew in Greater Stühlingen to carry that family name. He was followed shortly by Daniel [R4033; 12.04.1664], who seemed to have already been under protection. One may surmise that David and Daniel were brothers, although their origin is uncertain. However, the few records on Daniel appear spurious; they might have resulted from writing or copying errors. It is likely that the family designation `Meyer/Mayer` originated as a patronymic for descendants of a `Meir`. In this case, Meir (Meierle) ben Jacob Bloch would be a primary candidate. Such a theory is supported by similarities in naming patterns between the Meyer and Bloch clan. In 1671 David had moved to Eberfingen [R4254; 06.25.1671], where he stayed from then on. David was a cattle dealer. .
